Regular visitors will be pleased to learn that truly scintillating and deeply delicious new beer from Greene King is easy to get hold of! It's also available on draught in selected GK pubs (I have yet to taste it). The brewery is using a new style of beer engine in pubs that enables customers to choose a "northern head" or a "southern head". GK also recommends a cooler serving temperature than is the norm for cask ale.
Greene King, St Edmunds (England)
The packaged version, which comes in a handsome bottle with a stained-glass motif to stress the history and heritage of the brewery's home town, Bury St Edmunds, is 4.2% alcohol. The gold/pale bronze beer is brewed from Tipple pale malt and hopped with American Cascades. It has an intensely fruity aroma (pears, lemon and gooseberry), balanced by juicy malt and spicy hops. Sappy malt, tangy fruit and gently bitter, peppery hops fill the mouth while the long, complex finish is finely balanced between malt, tart fruit and bitter hops. Wonderfully quenching. Malt: high. Fruit: high. Hops: moderate. 4.2% ABV, 50cl, 1.69, Sainsbury's, Tesco, selected Waitrose.
