This is a "carbon neutral" beer from the famous family brewery on the Suffolk coast at Southwold. The 500ml bottle is made with lightweight glass and is brewed in a modern, state-of-the-art brewhouse where water and steam are captured and recycled while spent grain and hops are delivered to local farms.
All the raw materials are locally sourced: East Anglia Maris Otter pale barley malt, water and Adnams yeast culture. Boadicea hops come from the only commercial hop farm in Suffolk. Boadicea isa new hop variety and is close to being an organic hop. Its "aphid resistant", which means it has been bred to resist attack from pests by taking genes from different older hop varieties. As a result, only low levels of pesticides are used by the farmer to control the pests.
Adnams, East Green (England) (RP) The beer has a pale straw colour with a hint of sulphur on the nose and rich tangy fruit peaches and lychees with spicy hop resins and digestive biscuit maltiness. Bittersweet fruit dominates the palate but its balanced by juicy malt and tangy hops. Hop bitterness builds in the finish but ripe fruit and cracker wheat maltiness give balance. The finish is long and the beer is wonderfully refreshing.
Malt: high. Fruit: high. Hop bitterness: medium. 4.3% ABV, 50cl, 1.79, Co-op, Morrisons, Sainsbury's. | |
