Steve Skinner started his brewing career on Jersey and moved to Truro in Cornwall in 1997. The success of his beers - there are now nine regular draught ales in his portfolio - forced a move to bigger premises in 2003 where a 25-barrel plant can produce 375 barrels a week. There's a visitor centre attached and there are regular brewery tours.

The cask version of Betty Stogs was named CAMRA's Champion Best Bitter in 2008. Steve gets Cornish pale malt from three farms within a 10-mile radius of the brewery. He adds crystal malt to Betty Stogs along with English Northdown hops and Styrian Goldings from Slovenia.

Betty Stogs in a figure from Cornish folk lore. She couldn't cook or sew and didn't look after her children while she concentrated on boozing. As a result the "little people" took her children away from here, washed them in the morning dew and returned them to her in pristine condition. As she result, she became a reformed character though, I trust, she continued to enjoy a tankard of ale.
Skinner's, Betty Stogs (England)
The beer is a pale bronze colour with a lively collar of foam. The aroma has a fruitiness reminiscent of freshly-baked apples with a spicy, clove-like note, floral hop resins and slightly toasted malt. Hops dominate the palate bitter, spicy, resinous backed by tart fruit and juicy malt. The finish is long, quenching, rewarding, the fruit having a more citrus note now, balanced by bitter hops and juicy malt. Malt: high. Hops: high. Fruit: moderate. Available in 253 branches of Waitrose nationally and 200 Tesco branches, mainly in the south-west but growing. Also available from the brewery. 4.0% ABV, 50cl, 1.95, brewery website, Beersofeurope, Realbeerbox, Beerritz, Local Tesco, Utobeer, Waitrose.
