Einstok, Icelandic Doppelbock (Iceland) This beer was originally stocked by Harvey Nichols for Christmas 2011, but I'm delighted to see that in May 2012 it is still available from harveynichols.com and, presumably, in stores. Located just 60 miles south of the Arctic Circle, Einstok (which means unique in Icelandic) brews its Doppelbock with water from the Hlioarfjall Mountain as well as Munich malt, pilsner malt,
crystal malt, chocolate malt and Bavarian hops. It pours a mahogany/dark amber colour with thin, off-white head, and immediately offers up lots of roasted and chocolaty aromas, with spice notes and plenty of robust red fruit too. In the mouth it is smooth and richly textured, the caramel depth and malty weight caressing the palate, but then it begins to bite a little, a nicely bitter hop quality and a leafy, herby notes along with a squirt of lemon juice freshness cutting through the sweetness and alcohol. A lovely drop, and I'm glad I squeezed this limited edition beer in before this year's stocks are exhausted.
