Shepherd Neame, Christmas Ale (2102 brew) (England) The tradition of brewing dark, malty and spicy Christmas beers is an ancient one. This version from Shepherd Neame is not so darkly Christmas cakey as some, but it makes up for that in its refreshing drinkability. It pours a ruby/tawny colour with moderate white head, and the aromas are of ground ginger, biscuit and darker malty tones. In the mouth it has really good freshness and crispness despite the strong 7% alcohol, with some date and chicory bite to it as well as more coffee and walnutty festive flavours. It's dark and does say Christmas, but has that extra easy drinkability over some versions - and it's moderately priced and easy to buy too. 7.0% ABV, 50cl, 2.00, brewery website, Morrisons. | |
