2009 Beer gongs!
The Queen's New Year's Honours List has bestowed honours on a couple of beer-related citizens. Congratulations to them both:
CAMRA founder is made an MBE
Michael Hardman has been made an MBE in the New Years Honours. Hardman popularised the term 'real ale' and has been at the forefront of a long and successful campaign to save traditional British beer and to
promote the breweries that produce it. He was one of the four founders of CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, at a time in the early 1970s when the big brewers were pushing traditional beer to the edge of extinction by
concentrating on marketing bland, processed keg products.
As CAMRAs first national chairman, he developed the phrase 'real ale' now in everyday usage and recognised by dictionaries to describe Britains unique, living beers. He created both the Good Beer Guide, an
annual bestseller, and the national monthly newspaper Whats Brewing.
After leaving CAMRA, Hardman combined his work as a national newspaper and radio journalist with public relations in the brewing industry.
He worked with Youngs Brewery in London and its charismatic chairman, John Young, for 27 years, handling royal visits by the Queen, the Queen Mother, Prince Charles, Diana Princess of Wales, Princess Anne and Prince Edward.
They once famously stage-managed an event at a pub in the East End of London when the Queen Mother pulled a pint of bitter and drank it enthusiastically.
Hardman, whose MBE is for services to the Campaign for Real Ale and the brewing industry, runs a communications and publications consultancy in Reigate, Surrey.
OBE for Adnams
Jonathan Adnams has been awarded the OBE. He said: I am delighted to accept this honour as a public acknowledgement of what Adnams has achieved over the years. Wherever possible, our aim is to make long-term
decisions that are good for our business, employees, our community and the environment. Adnams has been brewing beer in Southwold since 1872 and I firmly believe that our approach to sustainable business and
commitment to doing the right thing will keep us here for many years to come.
Jonathan joined Adnams in 1973 as a brewery engineer apprentice and has since worked in all aspects of the company. Jonathan joined the Adnams Board in 1988 running pubs and property and then assuming the role of
Managing Director in 1997. Jonathan became Chairman in August 2006. His passion for the East Anglian coast led him to become a member of Southwolds lifeboat crew, where he served 28 years with some 15 years as
senior helmsman.
Adnams has embedded social and environmental respect in its culture; the firm has invested in sustainable and local community policies over many years.
Described as a values-led company Adnams believes that doing thing right makes good business sense.
