BEER NEWS - July 2008

InBev hot on the chase

The coroprate beer world has been enthralled as Europe's giant beer company, InBev, tussles to takeover America's collosus Anheuser-Busch. July 1st, InBev released this statement: "InBev remains committed to its proposal to create the worlds leading beer company through an acquisition of all the outstanding common shares of Anheuser-Busch Companies Inc.at $65 per share in cash, representing an immediate premium of 35% over the unaffected share price and a premium of 18% over the previous all-time high in October, 2002." Carlos Brito, Chief Executive Officer
of InBev, said: "Our firm proposal of $65 per share reflects the full and fair value of the company. The proposal is backed by fully committed financing, and provides immediate certainty of value in a weakened stock market environment. Our firm proposal was rejected in favor of a newly formulated management plan with significant execution risks. In addition to guaranteeing immediate value for Anheuser-Busch shareholders, our proposal is predicated on an established track record of international expansion and consistent growth in profitability. Given the seriousness of our firm proposal, we were surprised that we did not hear from Anheuser Busch's Board of Directors, management or advisors prior to the rejection."

Feeling festive?

Dedicated Transatlantic beer lovers can take in two major beer festivals coming up over the next few months, kicking off with the annual bash in London, The Great British Beer Festival, which will be taking over Earl's Court from 5-9 August 2008. There will be at least 450 beers available throughout the festival as well as cider and perry, all available in pint, half pint and third pint measures. You can also play on some traditional pub games, enjoy live music, sample traditional pub snacks and attend tutored beer tastings. Details from CAMRA's website. Meanwhile, Denver, Colorado plays host to the Great American Beer Festival 9-11 October. Last year 46,000 people attended, and tickets are available from the Festival website.

Belgians invade London

Meanwhile, from 21-27 July 2008, twin pubs The Dove in Broadway Market, Hackney and The Dovetail, in Jerusalem Passage, Clerkenwell, are hosting a Belgian Beer Week. They say that "Belgian Beer Week will give consumers the chance to sample a whole range of beers from the region with advice from experts such as beer sommelier Phil Lowry and so called Belgian beer ambassador Marc Stroobandt.". The schedule includes: Monday 21st July - Phil Lowry presents a tasting of the ten favorite Belgian Beers of much loved beer expert Michael Jackson. Tuesday 22nd July - UK launch of Flemish beer Brugse Zot Brune from the De Halvemaan Brewery. Wednesday 23rd July - The Big Dove Quiz, sponsored by The Palm Breweries. Thursday 24th and Saturday 26th - Customers can have their photograph
taken and printed on a bottlle of Vedett bottle of beer. Friday 25th - Marc Stroobandt hosts an evening of Belgian Beer with Rochfort cheese and Belgian Chocolate. Saturday 26th - The Artois quiz. Sunday 27th - Duvel Moortgat will host an evening celebrating their stable of beers. See www.dovepubs.com.

Yorkshire pride

Barnsley brewer, Acorn, has created a special cask brew to celebrate Yorkshire Day. Yorkshire Pride (3.7% abv) will be rolled out in July, ready for the "Tykes'" big day on August 1 - an increasingly popular annual event for Yorkshiremen in the proud White Rose region and beyond. Managing director and head brewer Dave Hughes said: "At Acorn we use the same yeast strain as the original Barnsley Bitter, so really all our beers are true Yorkshire ales. However, we thought it particularly fitting that we should produce an ale to mark this very important day in the Yorkshire calendar. Yorkshire Pride is brewed with a low colour malt to produce as light a beer as possible to reflect the White Rose of the county. The English hops
used work very well with our particular yeast strains and we believe we have captured another real Yorkshire brew to be proud of. We hope to see it drunk in quality cask ale pubs throughout the region during the build up to August 1."

Looking good

Whilst beer-pages isn't always seduced by fancy packaging and corporate branding, we do heartily approve of good label and pump clip designs. Zero Design of edinburgh has just completed a new branding project for Yorkshire's Dent brewery. Zero Design says: "Dent has always had a quirky approach to its branding, so we picked up on a particular theme and looked at developing it throughout the project. Sheep. Or should I say, Swaledale Sheep." Dent's Judith Beeley says: "We are really looking forward to making the most of our new brand identity our beers are first class and now our image reflects that quality. At the same time it reflects both our sheer enjoyment of being involved with craft brewing and our attention to detail that produces our national prize-winning beers. All in all its a fantastic boost to developing the future of Dent Brewery."

Here at beer-pages, we rather agree...
