BEER NEWS - March 2011

BrewDog canned

can BrewDog, Scotlands largest independent brewery has just announced the launch of its flagship beer, Punk IPA, in cans. The 330ml cans will initially be available exclusively from Sainsburys nationwide and the supermarket will now also stock the brewer's 5AM Saint amber ale and 9.2% ABV Hardcore IPA. BrewDog now have four beers in 350 Sainsburys stores nationwide. Punk IPA will be "the only craft beer available in cans in the UK," and the press release from BrewDog suggests "the packaging completely eliminating the risk of light damage to the beer," as well as "reducing environmental impact and being easier to transport and recycle." True to their anarchic spirit they are also holding a "crap beer amnesty," at their Aberdeen bar on Friday, March 18th where you can swap any can of beer for one of the new Punk IPA in cans.

Caps off

bottles ... to Otley Brewing Company. OK, we'll confess this isn't the most riveting news story of the month, but the brewery has introduced a splash of colour to its traditionally black and white beer bottles. Due to the continuous expansion of its beer portfolio, the coloured bottle caps will "make it easier to distinguish the different Otley beers available to customers." Managing director, Nick Otley, said: "We didn't want to detract from the overall brand but wanted to differentiate the products within the brand itself. As we've established such a strong image with our black and white logo, we decided that introducing the new coloured bottle caps would be best for our customers without steering away from our core image."

Go WEST

award winners Glasgow-based WEST brewery is celebrating after taking home the Best Family Friendly Restaurant award at the glittering Scottish Restaurant Awards bash. The brewery, bar and restaurant is based in the iconic Templeton building on Glasgow Green, and was voted Scotland's top destination for a family dinner by a team of select industry experts at the Glasgow Science Centre awards ceremony (beer-pages' Willard Clarke was a judge of the awards). Petra Wetzel, managing director of WEST and photographed right holding the award, said: "Picking up the award for the Best Family Friendly Restaurant in the country is such a fantastic achievement and true testament to the team's tremendous commitment to the business. "It's very important to us that WEST is a place where families can come together. As a native Bavarian the beer hall is a big part of our national culture, it's a place where families traditionally congregate to eat, drink and relax together.

DR.iNK beer

shop front Beer fans (and foodies) in London have been able to access a new 'beer boutique' in Fulham called DR.iNK since it opened in 2010. There they can choose from 600 different premium bottled beers, as well as homemade edible delicacies. The deli claims to "champions craft beers from England and track down world offerings from far flung reaches," and runs popular tasting days. A new calendar of master brewer drop-ins, as well as craft beer supperclub nights is lined up for 2011. Through until Mat there's a programme of suppers with 12 sample craft beers and five dishes pairing to the drinks. For details phone 0207 610 6795 or email [email protected].

Sharp's not Doomed

logo Having brought you the news last month that Sharp's of Cornwall had been acquired by Molson-Coors, we learn that the award-winning brewery has taken delivery of two new fermenting vessels, which will increase its brewing capacity by 1100 firkins, to produce a further 300 brewers barrels each week. The equipment investment, worth around 125K, is evidence of the planned continued growth for the Rock-based brewery. Commenting on the new investment, Stuart Howe, Head Brewer at Sharp's Brewery said: "This is an exciting time for the brewery. It means planned growth for Doom Bar and the other Sharp's beer brands can now be supported. We have ambitious plans for Doom Bar, we'd like it to be one of the top three cask beers in the UK in the future and this increase in capacity will help us get there."

Ginger spice

stone's bottle Stone's Ginger Wine is launching into the fast-growing and relatively new category of alcoholic ginger beers with the launch of Stone's Ginger Joe, "a refreshingly feisty alcoholic ginger beer." It has been available across on and off-premise channels since the end of February, joining a category that is currently worth 21.8m per annum in the UK. Clare Griffiths, Vice President European Marketing for Constellation Wines Australia & Europe, who own the Stone's brand, says: "Stone's Ginger Joe is a major launch in the relatively new, dynamic ginger category. We pride ourselves on spearheading innovation and bringing successful new brands to market and this launch represents a major brand investment by Constellation. Ginger experts, Stone's, will bring the same craft, heritage and quality that has bought us success in the ginger wine market to the alcoholic ginger beer category."
