Good Beer prospers
CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, has announced that both Cask Marque and the Society of Independent Brewers
(SIBA) have pledged their support to its best-selling title, the Good Beer Guide, by sponsoring the forthcoming 2012 edition, due for release in September.
The Good Beer Guide is now in its 39th edition and remains a wholly independent guide to Britain's pubs and every brewery currently
operational across the nation. Pub entries for the Good Beer Guide are chosen by CAMRA's 120,000-strong membership.
This will be SIBA's first sponsorship of the CAMRA title, and they will be putting their name to the breweries section. SIBA's
Nick Stafford, said: 'SIBA represents most local brewers in the UK and they are proving to be a dynamic part of cask ale growth.
Real ale consumers have always appreciated local artisans in brewing and SIBA wishes to thank them for their support through
sponsorship of this iconic publication.' Our own Willard Clarke, the guide's editor, said:
'The Guide is all about attracting people old and new to try the best British beer inside the best 4,500 pubs in the land.
Thanks to the support of two of the industry's foremost campaigners for quality in the beer and pub industry, we are able to
continue this mission.'
Beer in the frame
The British Beer & Pub association are launching a nationwide campaign to highlight the plight of local pubs and celebrate their
importance to the British community. Amateur and professional photographers
are invited to capture scenes from their local pubs within six distinct categories in the hope of winning an Olympus camera
and for their image to be exhibited in a top London gallery from 16th-23rd May 2011.
The competition aims to raise awareness about the loss of so many local pubs, hundreds have disappeared from the British
landscape. Recent figures show on average, 25 pubs per week are closing and with 13,000 jobs lost in 2010, more are at stake.

Motely Brew
Welsh micro-brewery, the Otley Brewing Company, has announced its new seasonal beer for April, Motley Brew.
Motley Brew is a 7.5% ABV IPA beer that is chestnut red in colour and is "infused with sweet notes of malt, caramel and citrus fruits,
leading to a dry alcoholic finish. The big aromas and high bitterness gives it a classic IPA mouthfeel. "
Nick Otley, managing director of the Otley Brewing Company, said: "This beer is an excellent mix of bitter and fruity notes and has
proven to be a popular brew over the past two years since it was first brewed. This beer is named after Otley family member and
head brewer, Matthew Otley, and will be available to all trade customers from April 1."
Hopping Hare Alfresco
Badger Ales once seasonal ale, Hopping Hare, has proved so popular that it is now to be made available all year round.
Brewed with aromatic Goldings, Cascade and First Gold hops, Hopping Hare is said to to be "well-balanced with a distinct hop flavour."
Head Brewer Toby Heasman explains; "We were looking to produce a much hoppier ale by combining different hops; the Goldings
create floral notes and a subtle bitterness whilst the Cascade provides an uplifting citrus characteristic. First Gold has been
used as a subtle bittering hop, which allows the aromas of the Goldings and Cascade to be maximised and used to their full
potential. I have also used the Flagon barley variety in the premium ale malt with a dash of chocolate malt to give an attractive
blonde ale with a golden hue. All in all, Hopping Hare has had a complete makeover." You can find Hopping Hare in
Tesco and Sainsbury's supermarkets.
Sumo!
While most of the nation was glued to the TV for The Six Nations deciders, Innis & Gunn worker Andrew Gourlay was forging
rivers, wading through mud and overcoming numerous obstacles in the dark - and in a sumo suit - to raise money for the aid
effort in Japan. On Saturday 19th March Andrew, a business development manager at the Scottish brewer, tackled The Mighty
Deerstalker, one of the toughest 10K endurance races in the UK. In three day Andrew raised 326 for the Japanese
Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund. One of 2,041 competitors to take part in the 10K torch-lit run, he completed the
grueling course in two hours 40 minutes. Commenting on the task ahead Andrew said: "You would really need to have
been to the event before to understand how much of an added difficulty this will be. Forgetting the fact that I might
actually sweat to death, there is also the consideration of how I am going to negotiate icy rivers, waist deep plunges,
swamps, and mud hills. This will be the end of me, but at least it's for a good cause!"
