BEER NEWS - July 2011
Greene King's interactive 'Ale Trails'
Greene King has launched a range of interactive online 'Ale Trails' - virtual and real-life trips around some of London's best pubs.
The trails work by using Google Maps to plot the pubs and an interesting route between them, and offer a downloadable card and map which can be printed out as a guide "a great excuse to get out and discover
the city over a pint or two," as they say. Those completing the trail receive a stamp from each participating pub, and those who receive six stamps get a free t-shirt. Trail sheets can also be picked
up from participating venues. The online Trails were created by marketing company Snowball, who tell beer-pages there are four Ale Trails currently covering the City & Spitalfields,
Southwark & the City, Westminster & Soho and Kensington & Marylebone.
American Beer Festival
Celebrate Your Beer Drinking Independence with the White Horse on Parsons Greens third American Beer Festival from August 4-7, 2011.
There's more to American beer than bland, mass-produced fizzy stuff: the White Horse says is will "unleash the finest the
American craft brewing movement has to offer." This trans-Atlantic taste bud trip showcases draught beers from the likes of Anchor, Brooklyn, Blue Moon. Flying Dog, Goose Island, Ommagang, Sierra Nevada,
Victory and more. To book your tickets for the tasting session email [email protected]. Weather permitting the BBQ will be
fired up and offering a whole host of American classics and the beer quaffing will be accompanied by appropriate live
music from The Steelers and Fallen Heroes.
Otley's Ruby Murray
The Otley Brewing Company has re-introduced 'Thai-Bo', its Thai-Green curry inspired golden ale. The company says the 4.6% ABV beer was a "massive success" during its re-launch at the Great Welsh Beer
and Cider Festival in June, selling out halfway through. The ale which is infused with lemon grass, lime zest, kaffir lime leaf and galangal, is the first of two collaborative ales jointly brewed by
Otley and writer Melissa Cole, the second being a gooseberry and elderflower pale ale called HedgrO. Both were launched in London on 30th June in a pub crawl that started at the Jolly Butchers in Stoke Newington
via The Rake in Borough Market, The Euston Tap in Euston Station and The White Horse on Parsons Green. Thai-Bo and HedgrO are both available on cask only with prices starting from 82.
The Fox Comes to Life
The popular "Old Speckled Hen" fox, an icon from the brand's advertising past, is to be brought to life in "a charming new manifestation of the famous character."
From July 15th the fox will star in a series of new ads on TV channel Dave, in a campaign that will "help Old Speckled Hen reach 17m beer drinkers across the UK." The new fox is a nod to the much loved 'Old Fox'
character from the ads in the 1980s and '90s, and is described as "a sharp-tongued and thoroughly modern chap."
The campaign forms part of a 3.5m support package to increase brand awareness and drive drinker demand for the beer. The fox is also described by OSH as "a dashing and debonair character," though here at
beer-pages towers we do note a similarity to another TV fox. Boom boom!
Rik Mayall bombs
Bedford brewery Wells & Young's announced today the launch of a new series of online 'Bang On Guides' featuring The Bombardier. Reprising his role as William Charles Bedford, The Bombardier,
comedy legend Rik Mayall stars in the first video since the campaign launched in May with a TV advert. The 'Bang On Guides' feature The Bombardier taking viewers on a 'how-to' adventure for a
variety of sports and hobbies. Launched to coincide with The Open Championship this week, the first 'Bang On! Guide' is The Bombardier's Guide to Golf. The Bang On Guide to Golf is available to

of their head brewer Peter Gouldsbrough who has previously won many awards for his creations. "We have high hopes for our new brewery!" says Laura Morris of Morecambe Bay Wines and Spirits, "We've got
