On Top of the Wold
It's been a good end to the year for East Yorkshire micro brewery Wold Top Brewery. Following its triumph in the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) Business Awards in November, which itself came a few weeks
after its success in the SIBA Great Northern Beer Competition, the Wold Newton-based Wold brewery has also won the Best Design Concept Award for its contemporary labels, pumpclips, gift packs and marketing
materials. Julian Grocock, SIBA chief executive, said: "To succeed, small brewers have to do so much more than just brew great beer: marketing, customer service, pack design and community support are all areas in
which they have to become experts." Established in 2003, Wold Top Brewery brews traditional real ale from home and Wolds-grown malting barley and chalk-filtered Wolds water.

Slingbacks at Dawn
The Slingbacks in questioning being the Rosslyn Park Ladies Rugby team, currently in their 15th season playing in National Championship. But for lovers of rugby and beer, the best news is that
on Saturday 3rd December, from 3pm - midnight at Rosslyn Park FC, Priory Lane, Upper Richmond Road, SW15 5JH, the 4th annual Rosslyn Park beer festival will be offering a selection of 'Winter Warmers',
including spiced ciders and Christmas ales. Accompanied by live music into the evening, the festival is touted as "a great opportunity to get warmed up for Christmas in the welcoming surroundings of one of
South London's oldest rugby institutions." At the same time you can also watch Rosslyn Park 1st XV take on rivals Blaydon.
World's Biggest Liar Crowned
A nuclear power contractor has been crowned the World's Biggest Liar. Glen Boylan, 46, a supervisor at Sellafield contractor Stobart's, got the judge's vote for his story about a visit to
Cumbria from Prince Charles - involving a meal consisting of the Prince's favourite food - peanut and salad cream sandwiches. Boylan claimed he and 'Prince Charlie' had got embroiled in a snail
race during which the Prince implored him to remove the snails' shells to make them go faster. The Jennings Brewery-sponsored competition is now well-established, and having been runner-up in 2010,
Glen says he comes up with his best lies while out on regular four mile walks across the Cumbrian moorlands with his trusty dog. "I'm stoked!" he said, "I've been practicing for ten months for this
and part of my strict training regime has been to frequent the Sailor's Return pub in Maryport where I meet up with the best liars around."
Stocking filler?
The second edition of CAMRA's Book of Beer Knowledge - "the essential source of pub trivia ammunition" - has just been published. The pocket-sized book will "load beer drinkers with the ultimate pub trivia before
a trip to their local," according to CAMRA. Compiled by beer writer Jeff Evans it contains more than 200 entries covering the serious, silly and the downright bizarre from the world of beer consisting of
beer facts, records, stats and anecdotes. Jeff Evans said: "I've always been fascinated by facts and figures so it's been a great pleasure to put together tables and charts showing lots of information beer and

All Hail Fuller's
Black Cab Stout is the new seasonal cask beer from Fuller's, part of a raft (if that's not mixing our transportational metaphors too much) of pre-Christmas special brews hitting pumps and shelves.
Described as "a rich, dark beer celebrating one of the iconic images of its home town, London," the beer will be available in Fuller's outlets until year end. Brewed with a combination of five different malts,
some heavily roasted for a near jet black appearance, Black Cab Stout is 4.2% ABV and Fuller's Head Brewer John Keeling said:
"Stout is one of the stand-out beer styles of the UK beer scene, and it's been some time since Fuller's made one in draught. The brewing team really showed their knowledge when we recreated an old double
stout recipe for our Past Masters series earlier this year and they have shown once again that they know the way to make a great beer with Black Cab."
