RECENT RELEASES - February 2012
MJ Fortis
Ilkley Brewery's MJ Fortis is a full bodied stout that readers in and around Leeds can sample at the city's stew and oyster bar, Calls Landing. MJ Fortis has been added to the range at the
riverside venue as a local alternative to a certain other well-known stout, a traditional match for oysters. Calls Landing is keen to use locally sourced produce where possible and says "Ilkley Brewery is
under 20 miles from Calls Landing so, coupled with the fact they brew excellent, award-winning beer, it was a natural choice for us to serve MJ Fortis which pairs perfectly with our fresh oysters."
MJ Fortis is one of three craft beers in the MJ Artisan Ales range which was launched in November last year with MJ Pale and MJ Summit IPA. The brewery says MJ Fortis "appeals to those who like dark, thick,
substantial beer. The stout is 4.1% ABV and is made with Bramling Cross and Galena hops which give a rich and creamy finish with aromas of chocolate, coffee and berries."
Equator
Not a beer but a zero alcohol, zero calorie 'Beer Flavoured Drink'. Equator is a new product "for discerning fans of premium beer," that has just been stocked by Tesco in 4 packs with an recommended selling price
of £2.99. According to the cpmpany, Equator "looks like a premium beer but unlike most low alcohol beers, it really is 0.00%. This means it has zero alcohol, zero calories and zero sugar." The drink has been
created by the team behind WKD at Beverage Brands. Beer-pages has received a sample of the drink and will be reviewing it soon.
Moulins d’Ascq
Not new beers, but new to the UK are the ranges from French artisan producers Moulins d’Ascq and Brasserie Saint-Germain. Both breweries are situated in northern France, and have been imported by Atlas Vintners.
Moulins d’Ascq is an organic certified producer, and beers include the Moulins d’Ascq Triple at 8% ABV and Brasserie St Germain's Page-24 Reserve Hildegarde Ambree, another strong beer at 6.9% ABV,
brewed as a homage to Hildegard of Bingen.
125 Celebratory Stout
Following the success of their special anniversary stout brewed last year, Wadworth is bringing back 125 Celebratory Stout for the month of February 2012.
Originally brewed as a one off for the 125th anniversary of the first brew in the Northgate Brewery in February 1886, the bottled version of the is "back by popular demand," according to Wadworth Brand Manager
Christine Evers. The recipe for the 125 stout was found by Head Brewer Brian Yorston in the pre-1900 documented records of one of his early predecessors. The modern brew matches the original recipe
closely "with big complex coffee aromas up front from the combination of amber, crystal and black malts, and a full flavoured sweet finish." 125 Celebratory Stout is on draught in selected Wadworth pubs
during February, the bottled ale is available from their Visitor Centre and during February online customers can order a mini-cask of the draught stout from
wadworth.co.uk.
Signature Ales
Not one new beer, but 12: Lancashire-based brewer Thwaites has revealed the 12 beers that will make up its new 2012 Signature Range of guest ales that will be brewed in its new "micro-craft brewery."
The range covers a wide spectrum of brewing styles and strengths, from a "light and refreshing" fruit beer made with Lancashire Loganberries, Logan's Run, to a "strong but mellow winter brew" called Old Dan.
The first Signature Range was introduced in 2011 and Thwaites is aiming to "continue to capture the imagination of drinkers whilst having some fun creating some quirky and interesting beers."
The range will also celebrates key 2012 events such as the Olympic torch relay with Torch Light ale, Whet the Whistle to coincide with the European Championships in June and Egg Roller, a double fermented
chocolate stout for Easter. Marketing Manager Lee Williams says "The 2012 Signature Range offers something for everybody and all kicks in January with winter warmers Old Dan and Tavern Porter both of which
will be available at the Thwaites bar at the Manchester Ales Festival."
